You know how families are always there for you and you can always confide in them whenever you need a shoulder to cry on and if you ever just need someone to talk to there is always someone to listen to your rants and ramblings about nothing at all and are just great listeners and who don't judge you no matter what situation you might be in or trouble you may cause? Well......me neither.
It all sounds so very nice and somewhat attainable, but the truth is that most families completely forget about you once you become an adult. At least mine did.
I remember my childhood being quite nice actually. I always had an aunt or a cousin who wanted to take me somewhere or let me just hang around them for no reason at all. I would always get birthday gifts and cards with money in them. everybody seemed so much more interested in my well being and what I was up to then.
Then, it happened. Right around my 19th birthday, I realized that no one had wished me a happy birthday or sent me a card or anything. Of course there is the yearly courtesy call from my parents, but what about everybody else who seemed to be so interested in me before? I found myself wondering if I had somehow become extremely boring, uninteresting or had I been completely forgotten altogether?
I recently spoke with a few of my family members on Skype and they seemed excited about speaking with me. Of course this was after a massive family email was sent out about them having had a conversation with my brother on Skype. I ended the conversation with this tremendous feeling that after all this time, a mass email would be sent out to the family about my communication with the same family members who boasted about communicating with my brother.
I waited with such excitement, just knowing that after so long they wouldn't be able to resist bragging about having talked to me just as they had bragged about talking to my brother. I kept waiting....and waiting....and uh, I waited some more and you know what??? No email was sent out.....no glorious attention that had been shown to my brother. Nobody even cared. I found myself wondering...."Why do I even bother?"
Obviously, my brother seems to be a hell of a lot more interesting than me.....Of course I know better than that. Ha....but that's a whole other story. Maybe, I'll include those details next time.
